No ‘Poo Tips

drawing of curly hairIt’s been over a year since we said goodbye to shampoo. None of my colleagues or friends have done an intervention and I occasionally even get complements on my hair. So I must be doing something right.

As I researched and read about this No Shampoo method, it seems that everyone has their own spin and techniques. Here are some tips that have worked for us.

  • Get squeeze bottles that are easy to use and can direct your “shampoo” and “conditioning” liquids directly onto your scalp and hair. This also helps to keep it out of your eyes.
  • Make labels with your preferred formulary or ratio and affix them right to the bottle. This makes refills a breeze!
  • If you have very long hair, keep a mug in the shower. Add some “conditioner” to the cup and just dip the ends of your hair directly into the mug. This ensures you’re not missing any parts and also helps the hair absorb the conditioner. A handle helps you hold on tight with wet hands.
  • Keep notes on the different ratios that you’ve tried and the results, so you know what is and isn’t working. I found the addition of a little honey made a big difference in being able to detangle knots.
  • Tell your hairdresser your new method. He or she should be able to cut your hair without using shampoo, just minimal conditioner if needed.
  • Know that there is a transition period, especially at the beginning. Schedule accordingly (we started on vacation) or wear your hair back for a little while. It seems way worse to you than to anyone else.
  • Regularly use a boar bristle brush to distribute the oils in your hair. This is more important at the beginning while you’re still adjusting.
  • Simple washing techniques leads to simple styling methods. A drop or two of Argan Oil is all I need to control frizz and style my hair. It’s also a nice moisturizer for my hands.
  • Comb or brush your hair out at night before bed. This helps distribute the natural oils and also makes it easier to detangle after a morning shower.

Anyone else a follower of the No ‘Poo method? What are your tips?
